If there’s one thing that all singers agree on, it is that you need to take care of your voice!! It is your instrument, and because of that, you need to take care of it, as you would any other prized instrument. That’s the only way you’ll be able to keep your voice in excellent condition.
If you are wondering how you can take care of your voice, here are some tips from some of the best singing teachers from the ultimate online singing course.

A singer that didn’t warmup the voice!!

1. Always warmup and cooldown your voice!

The number one most important thing is to warmup and cooldown your voice before and after you do scales and singing practice and before and after a singing performance!

2. Always Hydrate

When you are singing vocal chords need to vibrate together without any friction. The best way to do this is to keep them hydrated with luke warm to room temperature water. It’s very important that you drink a lot of water when you are singing, and that you stay away from alcohol. Keep a bottle of water with you, and drink from it frequently. Water will help keep your throat from drying out and will keep it from cracking. Drinking water when you are singing can also ease any soreness you might have in your throat.

3. Stay Away from Cough Drops

Cough drops have menthol in them, and that menthol can make you lose your voice. Cough drops are intended to help ease a cough, but in singing, they can be a poison to your voice. If you feel like your throat is dry, try to drink some water and see if that helps you instead. If not possibly choose some gum.

4. Avoid Caffeine and Alcohol

You should try to avoid drinking alcohol and caffeine before you sing. Both of these drinks can seriously dry out your throat, which will make singing much more difficult for you. It is best to avoid them both before and after you sing, especially if you are going to be performing for a long period of time. If you absolutely must have coffee and it is important for you to have it before singing, try to drink it as close to your performance as possible. And if you do drink alcohol or caffeine please drink equal parts of water after.

5. Stop Smoking

Smoking can cause your vocal cords to swell, which makes singing uncomfortable. It can also cause permanent damage to your vocal cords. If you’re trying to quit, it is a good idea to stop smoking at least a week before you start singing.
NOTE. Smoking will greatly affect the quality in control of your singing voice.

6. Get Sufficient Sleep

This point is so important and often neglected!!!
It is important to get plenty of sleep when you are getting ready to sing. Getting enough sleep gives your body and voice time to recover from the stresses of the day, and it also gives your voice time to rest, so that you can sing your best. If you are stressed, it is wise to get more sleep, as that can make your voice tired as well.
HOT TIP! Do not eat 3 to 4 hours before you go to bed as this may cause reflux and burn and damage your vocal cords.

7. Do Breathing Exercises

It is a good idea to do breathing exercises before you start singing. This will help to keep your lungs from seizing up. Try doing some exhalations through your nose, and some inhalations through your mouth. Inhale air through your nose until you feel a stretch in the back of your throat, then exhale through your mouth.
HOT TIP! Try to breathe into your diaphragm and support all notes underneath the vocal cords with your diaphragm when singing. It is a good idea to do bridges, planks or crunches a few times a week to develop core strength.

With these tips, you should be able to do everything you can to take care of your voice. If you are going to be singing for a long time, it is very important to treat your voice well and to give it breaks. You can use the tips that you have learned here to make sure that your voice is in excellent condition for your performance.
